I don’t about you, but around our house in the summertime, flip-flops rule! They’re just so easy and quick to slip on and off… particularly with the two little munchkins.
BUT, I’ve always known that they certainly aren’t the best footwear in town. I had to stop wearing the really cheap-o kind a few years ago because I was getting so much pain in my arches. I also started to notice that the longer I’d wear them, I’d start to get knee pain, neck pain and even headaches. It’s all connected, you know!
I invested in what I jokingly refer to as my “geriatric” flip-flops! They’re a pair of flip-flops that has a built-in arch support, more coverage across the top so that they fit more like a sandal, and they’re made of leather and suede-ish fabric. They have ZERO sexiness about them, but my feet sure are happier!
When I’m out and about, I just put on my regular sandals or runners. Flip-flops are for around the yard, gardening, etc. It probably helps that I live in a small town and don’t get out much!!! I don’t have to dress for a fashion show everytime I go to the store… Thank GOD!!! I’d never shop if that were the case!
What I really need to find is a quality pair of flip-flops for the kids. I can’t stand seeing them wear those unsupportive, flimsy little flip-flops. I know they’re not good for their structure, biomechanics or gait. I’m not even sure I could explain what possessed my to buy them! I guess it was the cuteness and convenience factor!
I usually try to encourage them to go barefoot around the yard, or wear their other sandals or sneakers when we go out… “oooh, sweetie… look! These sandals look SOOOOOO much nicer with your outfit than your flip-flops!”
Sometimes it works, sometimes they’re on to me!
There are definitely no flip-flops allowed when we go to a playground, for a walk (or to a place where I know they’ll need to do a lot of walking) or for a bike ride. ‘Geez… I’ve gotta’ lay down the law at some point!
Here’s a link to a recent article about this very subject of flip-flops:
If you DO have foot problems as a result of flip-flops, read down to the comment about taping your arches with athletic tape. I’ve done this for years, too. It gives a lot of relief.
