What Will You Do With All That Halloween Candy?!

Amidst all the fun and festivities of Halloween comes some stress. No, not the stress of finding Halloween costumes. Stress in the form of nutritional toxicity! Each year, we are inundated with Halloween candy and junk galore as our wee ones are given every Halloween “treat” imaginable.
Back in the day, I can remember receiving chocolate [...]

More on the Swine Flu Vaccine…

My earlier article, “H1N1 ~Should You Get the Flu Vaccine?” has ruffled a few feathers. I’m not exactly surprised.
It was written from a personal viewpoint – not meant to be a purely scientific report. I can send you to the right places to read your scientific data. I simply wanted to share my thought process [...]

Motion is Life ~ Interval Work Out

Yesterday I mixed things up a bit.
I did 10 minutes of high-intensity interval resistance exercises with very short rest periods in between (excellent fat-burning exercise), then headed out for a run.
The “work out”:
30 squats with 35 lbs dumbbells on shoulders
30 push-ups
30 two-arm bent over rows with 2 x 25 lb. db’s
30 Pilates-like ‘reach & tuck’ [...]

Swine Flu Update

Here’s an excellent resource for current, accurate information regarding H1N1.
Also, make sure you bookmark this site for ongoing updates: www.swineflu.mercola.com
Did you know that since August 30th, 2009 the CDC has not been tracking H1N1 virus activity? (Yet, a National Public Health Emergency has recently been declared!)
Nowhere on the CDC site do they mention 1,000 confirmed [...]

HealthIER Doesn’t Have to Be Harder ~ Simple, Healthy Food Choices

I think I’ve made myself pretty clear in the years I’ve been writing as “Dr. Mom”… getting healthier isn’t about being perfect; it’s about making BETTER choices, more often.
We’re not perfect in this little familia. Not by a long shot.
However, I have become quite skilled in the area of making common choices healthier. Nothing I [...]

Motion is Life ~ Fat-Burning Cardio Work Out (Interval Sprints)

(Even the short people are expected to RUN around here!)
Last night I went out for some sprints before dinner. It was a last-minute decision to squeeze that in… yesterday was supposed to be an “off day” for formal working out. (No true off days for movement, though… that’s not meeting our innate genetic requirements for [...]

H1N1 ~ Should You Get the Flu Vaccine?

I’m finally going to start writing about this topic, first, because SO many of you keep asking me to! Second, because the powers-that-be have pushed me too far by declaring this a national emergency. It’s more than my already-full brain can take.
I’ll tell you what’s a national emergency – the number of people who die [...]

Motion is Life ~ Resistance Training Work Out

(Keep reading to understand! … YES, my move looked *just like* the guy’s in the video… kinda’ sorta’… without any of the talent or skill, that is!!)
Yesterday’s work out was pretty basic… except for the falling off the ball part. Yeah, that part wasn’t really all that basic! It was hilarious, and the kids and [...]

Holy Cow! Now THIS Is What I Call MOTION!!

You’ve just got to watch this video to believe it! These girls are incredible!

Motion is Life ~ An Active Lifestyle is a Requirement for Health

Yesterday was just a good, all around active day. I love those kinds of days.
Although I spent a fair amount of time working on the computer in the morning, I balanced it out with LOTS of movement throughout the afternoon.
Have I mentioned here before that MOTION is a requirement for health?! It’s not something we [...]

THE Leading Authority on Family Preparedness

I received a nice surprise today. A man I greatly respect and turn to as the decisive leader in the field of family preparedness, James Talmage Stevens, had some nice words to say about the Dr. Mom approach to keeping families healthy… even in the midst of great stress and potential crisis. (Kind of like [...]

A Simple, Inexpensive and Effective Wash for Fruit and Vegetables

I wish I could purchase or grow every single fruit or vegetable my family eats in a certified organic form.
Alas, no such luck.
When I do need to venture to the “dark side” of conventional produce (just kidding… relax!!), I make sure to do my best to remove toxic insecticides, pesticides and other harmful impurities by [...]

A Simple, Quick, Healthy Breakfast Idea for Kids

Here’s an example of a  VERY simple and quick breakfast for kids that meets the requirements for health right off the start: fresh fiber, protein and healthy fats.
These are the innate genetic requirements for nutritional health.
Also, there’s none of the things in this little meal that tend to move us AWAY from optimal health: things [...]

Motion is Life ~ Cardio Work Out

Yesterday was a cardio day. I went out for a quick and easy run. Just 3.5 miles… in the cold wind and pouring rain!
The good news? Lots of MUD!! I love, love, LOVE running in mud!
Strange, I know, but it’s a sign of a great run if I come back coated in mud!! Hey, I’m [...]

Motion is Life ~ The “Blech” Work Out!

It’s the “blech” work out because that’s how I felt about working out that day! This is Friday’s work out. I was having a lower energy day, physically… too much going on, etc.
I put off working out until really late in the day (not a good idea)… but I had a lot of demands to [...]

Life Radio ~ Health & Wealth Experts to Help You Succeed

This is a brand new and exciting adventure my husband, Dr. Marc VanHoogstraat, and I are on with our friend and Certified Life Coach, Todd Newton.
Check it out… expect AMAZING things from this up-and-coming team!!

Morning Habits of Healthy Kids…

Since many of you have asked… these are the nutritional supplements (”vitamins”) I give our kids and this is how I get them to take them.
At this point, no arm wrestling is required… they love the “shooters” concept. I suppose that could be problematic when they’re in college… but I’m runnin’ with it for now!
(We [...]

Every Healthy Choice Matters

Our current level of health and happiness is the cumulative result of the choices we have made thus far.
Science clearly demonstrates that our health, and ability to prevent chronic illness, is determined by our environment MUCH more than our genes. In fact, this science is called Epigenetics… the layer above old-school genetics!
This environment we create [...]
