Let Me Clarify the Breast Cancer “Issue”…

As you can probably tell, I have some rather deep emotions attached to the breast cancer issue!

For me, it’s a blend of personal with professional. I’ve gone through it with mom. I’ve done my homework – the conventional mindset, paradigm and treatment, as well as the more holistic approach. I also understand the research end of things.

I’m not a heartless, detached observer who just likes to spew opinions about the current medical monopoly on cancer! But it’s interesting the response you get when you dare tread on the sacred ground of cancer.

Interesting.

My mom had cancer. My dad has cancer. I have (had) several friends with cancer. I’m anything but heartless and detached on this issue.

Although I disagree with where the vast majority of the billions of dollars is being spent in the cancer business, I completely support the people who are trying to make a difference. THIS is what I wanted to clarify. I honor the people.

We do the best we can with the information and tools we have available at the current time, within our current belief system.

I don’t agree with the paradigm – the foundational premise – upon which the current research, treatment, information/education and fund raising are based.

The countless people who do “the walks”, raise the money, work the booths, help those going through cancer and recovering from it, and so on and so on are passionate and dedicated and are truly commited to helping others. I honor that. These are some exceptional human beings.

I just get SO completely irked at times by how incongruent the messages are.

Like the 1-2 punch at the breast cancer awareness booth the other day. Quite clearly, the routine was 1) invite passersby over to have a pretty pink sweet, and then 2) once they were indulging, they were asked for a donation for research for a cure for cancer.

The incongruency and misleading premise of that entire message makes my stomach turn. You can’t talk about “a cure” when you’re not even sure exactly how and where the money is being spent AND you’re handing people a proven contributor to the disease itself! (sugar intake causes inlflammation and decrease immune function and insulin response… all of which are the pillars of chronic illness.)

The women at the booth, by the way, were absolute sweethearts. I just wish they were being given something more congruent, truthful, scientific and successful to “pedal”.

I look forward to the day when “research” is primarily focused on how to NOT develop cancer in the first place… and teach the masses how to do that. Instead, we have an approach that’s based on treating the condition once it’s present, or attempting to genetically modify our cells in order to “trick” our genetic expression! Isn’t it a whole lot easier, and certainly safer, and FAR more cost effective to focus on the environmental lifestyle factors that have been proven to be so clearly connected to cancer?

Epigenetics is the science that, in many updated researchers’ educated opinions, is far superior to “old school” genetics. Epigenetics explains how we can ‘have the genes for cancer’ (or other conditions) yet not necessarily ever develop cancer. Epigenetics proves that a gene is only like a recipe in a cookbook, as described by Dr. James Chestnut, B.Ed., M.Sc., D.C.,C.C.W.P. The environment is what determines whether or not that recipe will ever be created.

Can you imagine if we suddenly saw billions being dumped into teaching people how to make lifestyle choices that are congruent with their genetic requirements to create health and prevent chronic illness, like cancer? What if some of that money were spent on providing the “tools” for these cancer-preventing choices, and making these things readily available to the masses (like chemo, radiation and drugs currently are)?

I wonder if there’s enough money in that approach to make the powers-that-be ever take it seriously?

I’d also love to see more “treatments” that cause less harm. Then again, I guess many of those are already out there and available… they’re just not from mainstream allopathy, so they’re not widely recommended.

I know my mother was essentially ridiculed and scolded by the oncology team when she expressed that she’d like to also incorporate some less harmful approaches in her treatment, like nutrition and other holistic choices. She was told that her “only options are chemotherapy and radiation… NOTHING else will ever work.”

Hmmm. So THAT’S where all the money’s going?? Nice.

Although she did partake in much of the conventional treatment, mostly out of understandable fear (surgery, radiation and drugs), her official file states, “patient refused proper care”.

Funny definition of “proper”, if you ask me.

“Patient did what patient darn well FELT like doing, as every patient has the right to do.” I might add, “Patient had half a brain to question a system that claims success yet has no evidence of such.” (How can there be “success” if more and more are still being diagnosed?)

BUT, I’m elated for those who DO use *whatever* approach and the result is more life and/or greater quality of life… whether it’s for a very long time, or a short time. Life is life, however we get there!

So, to all of you who do the walks and raise the money, good for you! I know your heart is in the right place… because I know so many of you. I love seeing people reach out to help other people.

Hopefully, someday soon, your walking and your efforts will support research that is even more effective – research that focuses on how to keep people out of the “cancer treatment” process in the first place… and if they DO end up with cancer, research that provides MUCH more successful treatment options that come with far less risk.
