As a parent in a free country, I’d like to think that I’m still allowed to choose how to parent my children. I don’t think that anyone has a more vested interest in the welfare of their child than that child’s parents.
I think it’s my job as a parent to keep my children safe and healthy, to fill them up with unconditional love and acceptance, to build a solid foundation of faith, morals, principles, character, logic and common sense… so that they can base all of their future decisions (when mom and dad aren’t around) upon that solid foundation, and to lovingly keep them on track… guiding them back “into line” when they get “out of line”!
I don’t expect a school or another parent to be responsible for all those things. Ultimately, it’s MY job as their parent. (I DO expect other adults that surround my children on a regular basis to contribute to their positive growth and development on a variety of levels.)
When it comes to nutrition and keeping our kids healthy, it’s a big job with massive responsibility. There are very real consequences to the decisions we make on behalf of our children. That’s why I’m not willing to just let ‘anyone’ make those decisions FOR me… or for my children.
Here’s an article I recently wrote on this subject. Please read it and share it with others… and let me know YOUR thoughts!
