An Overlooked Benefit of Growing Your Own Food

We’re finally back from our week-long getaway. Ahhhh… it was nice… a much-appreciated break!

(Although, I was abruptly reminded on a few occasions, that my children take their drama with them wherever they go! Ugh. Siblings. Enough already!)

So, you know that not-so-fun feeling you get when you return from vacation… and you have to unload the car, unpack everything, start creating that mountain of laundry that you’ll have to conquer some time soon… and THEN you realize that you have NOTHING to eat in the house??

(Why would you, silly? You’ve been gone for a week!)

I can honestly say that I’ve never been happier to have a vegetable garden than I was tonight!

After unloading, unpacking AND THEN going waaaaay beyond the usual and customary expectations of my role – using the weed trimmer everywhere, as well as hand-pulling weeds – I remembered that we had “no food”.

There was NO way I was going to make the 20 – 25 minute trip into a grocery store after a full day of driving, unpacking the remnants of our week away, and attempting to win landscaper/gardener of the year!

Of course, there’s always the hodge-podge stashed in the freezer! But after suffering through a few too many restaurant meals in the past seven days, I wanted “real” food!

“Ah-HA! I’ll go check the garden!” I thought.

Bingo! It was LOADED with tons of goodies we could call dinner!

After feeling vegetable-deficient for a week(even though we had veggies everyday… it just wasn’t the same), I think we made up for it all in one meal!

We had green beans, snow peas, green peas, a few Brussels sprouts, a few cherry tomatoes, some Romaine, spinach, bib lettuce, arugula, chard and collard greens.

My kids joked during dinner that they sure met their quota for veggies tonight… and that maybe they shouldn’t have to eat quite so many for the next few days!

Funny little people, they are!

Tomorrow I’ll make it back to the grocery store. For tonight, I was SO glad to have our own little source of home grown produce right outside the back door.

Even if you only have the room, or the time, or the patience for a tomato plant or some fresh herbs, I’d highly recommend this little piece of food heaven! Works well in a pinch!
