Hilarious Video of Kids Dancing!

This was just too good not to share!

No, these kids aren’t mine… but equally as loopy! Of course, I LOVE the exercise element of this clip, too! It’s not difficult to keep kids moving when they’re having this much fun!

Enjoy! (click on “Continue Reading”, then you’ll be able to click on the link)

Kids Watching Television & Moving Article – follow up

Yesterday’s article re: kids, television and movement isn’t working properly when you click “Continue Reading” – nobody seems to be sure why just yet!

BUT, the same article seems to be working just fine on my Facebook page (that imports articles from this blog!)

So, if you’d like to read the entire article (it’s short), and see the video clip (it’s cute), go to my Facebook page at www.DrMomOnFacebook.com.

Dr. Mom’s “Rules” for Kids Movement & Watching Television

Here’s a sneak peek inside our crazy little world!

We have a big “rule” in our house about watching television and movies – NO sitting around like a blob… letting your brain turn to mush! If the kids are going watch something, they’ve got to move their bodies! We have an understanding that every time a song comes on they’ve got to get up and dance – they love this… it’s not difficult to “enforce”!

If there’s no music, they know they need to get up every few minutes and jump around or do some jumping jacks, or even just change their position around. If they’re going to sit, I like to have them sit on a ball – exercise ball or otherwise – to really stimulate their proprioceptive input to their brains and develop balance and core strength.

Here’s a little clip of the kids watching our family’s favorite show, “So You Think You Can Dance”. It’s a good little work out for them on Wednesday nights! They LOVE watching the dancers – so do mom & dad, actually – and have a blast trying to make up their own dances! Good stuff!

Moving Bodies and Sucking Back Omega-3′s!

Every once in awhile, I find some twisted pleasure in proving to myself that I still have SOME level of control over my children. It’s so wrong, I know. I’ll start saving for therapy!

Call it bribery, call it brain washing… I don’t really care! I call it getting my kids to do what I want, especially if they think they’re going to get what THEY want!! Mua-ha-ha-ha-haaaa (insert evil laugh)!

This morning I was up and working before the sun was up, as is my usual routine most mornings. Usually, once the kids get up, I set my work aside for the day (or for a few hours, anyway) and do “kid stuff”.

This morning, I was on SUCH a productive roll with my creative content production that is was actually painful to push it aside! I made a big, healthy breakfast for the kids, sat down with them for circle time and chatted about the plan for the day.

I kept thinking, “Man, I could REALLY use another hour and a half or so to finish up my project!”

Low and behold, my kids decided – on their own! – that they’d tidy up everywhere and THEN politely ask me if they could possibly watch a kids’ show.

Well, well, well… isn’t this a convenient little twist of fate?!

You must understand that in our house, “kids’ shows” are a rarity…. they are not the norm. The kids get REALLY excited whenever mom and dad actually allow a little cartoon time.

So, like any good, crafty mother, I took full advantage of this opportunity! I said, “Sure…. you can watch kids’ shows IF you’ve totally cleaned your room. ”

“We already did, mommy!”

Whoa.

“Did you neatly make your beds?”

“Yes, we did!”

Well all righty then. This is looking good!

I have a funny little routine I follow whenver the kids DO watch anything – whether it’s a kids’ show, a movie or “So You Think You Can Dance” with their mom and dad!

They are required to MOVE. They can’t just sit like blobs. I tell them that sitting for too long makes mushy bodies and mushy brains. (Actually, it’s scientifically accurate… it’s just that scientist-type folks don’t usually use those words!)

So, we have a rule: anytime music is played, get up and dance! If there’s not been music for 5-10 minutes, get up and move anyway.

It’s hilarious to see two little people doing jumping jacks, push-ups, calisthenics and shakin’ their groove things in front of the television while still totally engaged in what’s going on!

My other rule is: if you’re going to watch kids’ shows “which take away from your brain’s health”, according to their mother, then you must fuel your brain first with the best nutrition possible – FISH OIL! You’ve never seen two children guzzle back fish oil so happily in your life!

I’m so cruel! Actually, I prefer to go with “creative”.

In all seriousness, condoning sedentary habits, like sitting in front of the television, computer or playing video games for extended periods of time is a dangerous mindset to pass on to children. Motion is life! Our brains REQUIRE motion in order to function properly… especially normal motion of the spine.

Also, it’s TRUE that, generally speaking, television is not good for a child’s developing brain. So mommy is right on the money with filling them up with fish oil (omega-3′s) to support optimal brain health.

Let’s see how long my kids allow me to get away with this!

What are they doing now? They got kicked out of the house and sent to the trampoline… swimming is soon to come!

Healthy Kids Make a Mother’s Heart Smile

There are definitely things in life that affirm to moms we’re doing a good job raising great kids (or have done a great job raising our kids).

Some of these are major moments, like your child making the challenging decision to do the right thing when faced with major peer pressure.  Other moments are just tiny little blips on the screen, but add up to something really wonderful. Like, receiving an unprompted hug or witnessing your child express kindness to another.

Ahhh, nice.

In this article, I discuss how my heart “smiles” not only in response to the predictable mothering moments of kindness, love, joy and so on, but how I also have similar feelings when I know that health is being created in my children, right before my eyes.

Check out the article to see what I mean. Here’s the link:

Traveling With Kids, The Healthy Way – Movement

Here’s another recent article on the subject of traveling with kids. This time, I discuss how we made every effort to fit regular movement and exercise for the kids into our recent trip to Atlanta.

The overall point of the article, whether you’re traveling or not, is that regular movement and exercise for children takes consistent, proactive effort… just like it does for grown-ups!

Radio Disney Dance-a-thon!

I’m not a fan of all-things-commercialized. I just about threw up the first time someone gave our daughter a Barbie as a gift. Of course, there were many more to come!

In all fairness, I grew up with Barbie’s and Disney… obviously to nowhere near the same degree that kids can nowadays. (did i just sound really old, or what?!) I didn’t have Disney Princess movies, dolls, ice shows I could go to, princess costumes (unless we made them ourselves), computer software, toy laptops… and so on. I had lots of books, a few Barbies, and some homemade clothes for them made by a generous neighbor. I had a big yard, close friends and a busy imagination.

So, when our kids beg to watch all the Disney and Barbie (and all the other annoying, highly-commercialized ‘favorites’) movies that their little friends watch, or have all the same toys that other kids have at their houses, or get on the various websites dedicated to all these characters (Webkinz… uugghh!), my eye muscles hurt from rolling my eyeballs back so far into my head! Gimme a break!

Get outside and play! Go make something! Read a book! Write a book! Create your own website! Color, draw, build something! Here’s a roll of duct tape and some string… surprise me! Know what I mean? Geez’ Louise, does everything have to be so media driven? Can’t my kids think for themselves anymore? Why am I such a “bad mom” because I won’t let them watch cartoons and I turn off the television or make them leave the room when commercials come on during the Olympics???

I’m just not a fan of ‘one-way’ communication. I don’t like a TV show, or a movie, or a commercial, or a website sending information into my kids’ brains without requiring any effort or thought on their part. I like them to move and think and carry on interesting conversations and ask interesting questions.

Yes, there’s a time to chill out and watch a movie just for the sake of entertainment alone. I love to do that myself. I just don’t like seeing kids do that on a regular basis. Yes, there are many educational shows and movies and websites. I don’t live in a closet! You know that’s not what I’m talking about!

One of my daughter’s friends listens to the Disney music channel constantly. My daughter began asking to listen to it, too, of course. I allow her to tune in occasionally, but I’m always a little bit turned off by the icky, growing-up-way-too-soon nature of most of the songs…. and I’m sure my parents said the same thing! So when she asks for Radio Disney, it’s another eye rolling muscle strain for me! Can’t you make your ownmusic, or something?! Here… take some wooden spoons and a pot… here’s your harmonica… where’s that guitar you got for your birthday?

Well, right now, I need to admit that I’m thrilled that Radio Disney exists. Yes, me. I said that.

There’s some program on right now that is geared toward little kids, with all happy, sweet and innocent songs. They’re most certainly way beneath my daughter’s age group. I couldn’t care less about that when it comes to this particular situation! Nobody singing them is an overpaid, under talented teeny bopper wearing provocative clothing and exotic dancer shoes! It’s truly a refreshing change!

Our kids have been dancing together, laughing, playing and singing to the music for the last 45 minutes. They’re calling it their dance-a-thon. They’re actually sweating, they’re dancing up such a storm! It’s really the sweetest thing to watch, when your kids are totally happy and loving each other’s company.

Of course, I also like the fact that they’re not sitting down like slugs on the couch and they’re feeding their brains with a heaping dose of proprioceptive input for overall well being… but that’s just me!!!

OK, the magic is over. Disney is back to the teeny bopper singers. I know I’m getting old because many of those songs definitely sound like nails on a chalkboard now! At least the kids have continued with their sweetness – they’re cuddled up together on our bed, with my daughter reading to my son. Aaaahhhhh. All is right with the world right now.

Our Happy, Bouncy Family!

(Sorry for the lack of posts lately… my site has been under some serious reconstruction!)

Recently, our family acquired a trampoline. My husband and I thought we were getting it for the kids… but it has turned out to be our new family hang out! I honestly can’t believe how many hours we’ve all logged on that bouncing wonder in the short time we’ve had it! I’m sure all our neighbors think we’re completely nuts!

Every morning, the kids head out on it while I make their breakfast. Then they’re out there again right after breakfast for a more lengthy routine. This is the time they chant, “Mommy, jump with us! Mommy, jump with us!” Who am I to disappoint them?! The three of us jump, take turns doing tricks, sing songs, act incredibly silly, practice gymnastics, create over-the-top performances and laugh, laugh, laugh!

This routine is usually repeated with my daughter and I during her little brother’s nap time. Now, my daughter wants her “Private jump time with mommy”, as she calls it! This additional bonding time has been an unexpected pleasant surprise and an added bonus to getting the trampoline.

When my husband comes home at lunch, he does this ‘Clark Kent’ turbo wardrobe change, then he’s out there lickety-split, jumping like a little boy… doing flips, jumping high up into the trees… sending me into near cardiac arrest! He’s such a goofball!

Several times throughout the day, the kids will simply announce, “I’m goin’ to jump”, and they’re airborne within seconds. They have their pre-dinner routine as well, and usually want me to head out with them as dinner is cooking.

After dinner is becoming one of my favorite new rituals. All four of us have spent some wonderful family time together on the trampoline, as we repeat many of the same antics and performances from earlier in the day. From our bouncy perch, we also observe the beautiful transition into night as the sun begins to descend over the lake. We listen to the sounds of nature, talk about our day, discuss our upcoming plans… even practice spelling words, doing math and brushing up on some Spanish.

Who would’ve thunk a trampoline could do all this?! We should have gotten one years ago!

I’ve noticed some pretty incredible physical changes in the few days we’ve had the trampoline. It’s like my son’s ‘baby fat’ has suddenly disappeared! He looks like a little boy now – a little boy with 6-pack abs! He’s faster than ever, and seems to have improved across the board in all his physical skills. It’s amazing to see.

My daughter has suddenly emerged as a fearless risk taker and adventurer. In just the very first week we had the trampoline, her performance at gymnastics truly sky-rocketed. In fact, she was asked to join the competitive gymnastics team in her first class after being on the trampoline for a week – the instructors said they noticed remarkable changes in just one week. How cool is that?? Her athletic little body is more chiseled than ever.

My husband and I have been awestruck as we watch our children’s physique and confidence levels soar.

In that same short time period, I’ve noticed obvious changes in both my husband and my midsections – it’s quite clear that all this jumping has caused us to tone up even more. I see and feel more definition in my legs and derriere, as well. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but I even lost a couple pounds in the first week! Nice bonus for jumping, playing and laughing! Come to think of it, laughing does burn a lot of calories and tone your abs!!

This morning, I woke up to the soothing sounds of a lovely rain shower. Ahhhh, how relaxing. Then, my very next thought was, “Oh no! We won’t get to jump this morning!”

I think we might be addicted!
