Eating Healthy Foods Doesn’t Need to be “Too Expensive”

Whenever I find myself in a conversation about nutrition and choosing healthier foods for our families, one of the most common “yeah-but’s” I hear is that it’s too expensive to eat healthy.
I can definitely see where this comes from. It’s completely understandable.
However, I think that with a few subtle shifts in thinking and spending, eating [...]

HealthIER Doesn’t Have to be HardER

I’m thinking of making this a regular ‘column’ here on the Dr. Mom blog.
I hear this virtually all the time: “It’s too HARD to eat healthy… or exercise regularly… or to de-stress…”, or whatever the lifestyle concern is.
I completely understand. In my opinion, health and happiness are PROactive – they take intention and effort. NOT [...]

Nutritional Choices ~ The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!

Again, another party tonight! Fun, fun, fun!
That means our focus AGAIN today has been to keep it healthy all day long so we can enjoy “tasty toxins” tonight if we so choose.
Breakfast was fresh fruit, whole milk organic yogurt, and some free-range organic eggs. Shortly after, the kids had almond butter (and grass-fed organic butter) [...]

Nutritional Choices ~ The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!

The overall theme of today is definitely “fill up with health FIRST!”
We’re heading out for a soon-to-be-seven-year-old’s birthday celebration with some other little munchkins. We’re going to the movies and to Rainforest Cafe afterward. I’m not anticipating that we’ll be loading up with purity and sufficiency at either location!
We’d don’t get popcorn when we go [...]

Nutritional Choices ~ The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!

Hmmm… I’m thinking I need to change things up here, regarding these nutritional choices posts. I’m looking for a little feedback…
My original intent was to share how I incorporate some healthier choices into my diet (and my kids’), without worrying about being “perfect” or spending TONS of money on better nutrition. Logging my choices for [...]

Nutritional Choices ~ The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!

Another day’s worth of food and beverage choices… some good, some not.
Early morning: 1 cup of coffee, 1/2 cup kefir, 1/2 banana
(Pure & Sufficient): organic coffee (and less of it than usual), organic cream, organic kefir and organic banana
(Toxic & Deficient): I know, I know… the coffee. Causes release of stress hormones (cortisol and catecholamines). [...]

Nutritional Choices ~ The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!

I’m going to enter a couple days’ worth of food logs in order to get caught up… and to get some of the more toxic and deficient choices off my chest!!
Day one
Early morning: Plum, 1/2 dozen or so almonds, 1.5 cups of coffee
(Pure & Sufficient): organic plum, raw almonds, organic coffee and organic real cream [...]

Does Forbidding Snacks Create Little Monsters?

I’ve been on the receiving end of much well-intentioned advice regarding food choices I make on behalf of my children. I’ve talked about it many times in various blog entries.
I’ve consistently found that most parents have no challenge with what I do “allow” my kids to eat… but they think I’m downright mean for what [...]
